What is a wetland?
In 50 years, birds have increased overall in wetlands, a singular exception that shows the way forward for saving birds and benefiting people
The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR), often referred to as "The Duck Factory," is critical to Wyoming waterfowl hunters. The vast majority of our annual dabbling duck harvest migrates to us from the PPR, originating both north and south of the Canadian border. The PPR is Ducks Unlimited's highest priority conservation focus area in North America and likely an area under some of the greatest threats.
Much of our diver migration originates from the Boreal Forest of Western Canada, second highest priority among DU's initiative landscapes. The Boreal has been the subject of intensive DU study and conservation effort over the past several years--partnering with DU Canada, the Pew Charitable Foundation and the Indigenous peoples of the area.
In addition, Wyoming benefits directly from DU's Northwestern Great Plains, Heartland Heritage and Habitat, and Peaks to Prairies initiatives, through which the national organization continues to restore and conserve critical waterfowl habitat within our state. Since 2016, the Fort Collins DU office has added staff to further their presence and effect here in Wyoming, and this is reflected in the growth of conservation project numbers and acres over those years.
There is no waterfowl conservation organization that represents the interests of Wyoming waterfowl hunters like Ducks Unlimited. Our vital conservation work provides support for migration both to and from the breeding grounds as well as our resident birds here at home. With your help, we will preserve our waterfowl hunting heritage through habitat conservation in these areas vital to the Wyoming migration and harvest.
