WASHINGTON, D.C. – January 30, 2025 – Today, the U.S. Senate confirmed former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum as the 55th Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior.

"The Department of the Interior has always been a very strong partner for Ducks Unlimited," said DU CEO Adam Putnam. "As governor of North Dakota, an area home to the most productive waterfowl breeding areas in the United States, he understands our collective responsibility to steward America’s natural places for the next generation. We congratulate him on a successful Senate confirmation and look forward to continuing our work together to conserve and restore critical habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife across the U.S."

Upon swearing in, Secretary Burgum will serve as the chair of the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission, which oversees all North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) and duck stamp funds. He will also be in charge of the National Wildlife Refuge System and all permanent voluntary wetland and grassland easements. Additionally, the Department of Interior’s U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and National Bird Banding Lab are important partners in tracking migration patterns for waterfowl in North America.
