Ducks Unlimited and its conservation partners have officially named Virginia's newest wildlife management area. Almost 80 people attended the dedication of the Doe Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA), which was established following the acquisition of nearly 700 acres of land in Accomack County. The property encompasses managed wetlands that were initially protected by the Nature Conservancy (TNC). These wetlands will provide excellent habitat for waterfowl.
Among those attending the dedication of the Doe Creek WMA were Virginia DU State Chairman David Adamson and many other DU members and volunteers, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) Director Bob Duncan and other VDGIF staff, TNC Director of the Virginia Coastal Reserve Steve Parker, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service representatives, and Wildlife Foundation of Virginia staff.
VDGIF used a National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant to assist in the acquisition of this property. Thanks to several generous donors, Ducks Unlimited provided $162,000 toward this effort. The Wildlife Foundation of Virginia supplied the remaining funds.
