SENECA FALLS - June 22, 2020 - Seneca Meadows Inc. has surpassed $50,000 in contributions to Ducks Unlimited over 17 years, boosting wildlife conservation and youth waterfowling opportunities in the Finger Lakes region.
This support earned Seneca Meadows Inc. the Heritage Sponsor level designation from DU. The latest pledge supported Ducks Unlimited's Lake Ontario area projects which focused on work in the Finger Lakes and Montezuma regions.
"Ongoing sustained support of our partners in conversation and wildlife habitat restoration is critical to advancing our environment in the long term, and our partner Ducks Unlimited is able to enhance our investment with local projects that also increase the quality of life for our community today," said Mark Benjamin, Seneca Meadows community relations director.
Seneca Meadows' commitment boosts Ducks Unlimited's Completing the Cycle Initiative along the Atlantic Coast. This initiative focuses wetland habitat conservation efforts to address the needs of Atlantic Flyway waterfowl throughout their life cycle, of which the region supports an estimated 7.6 million breeding waterfowl, representing 34 different species. Wetland conservation work along the Atlantic Coast also benefits the 900 other species of wildlife that rely on wetlands.
The Ducks Unlimited-Seneca Meadows Inc. partnership is helping generations of waterfowler enthusiasts. Seneca Meadows supports two local DU chapters, the Finger Lakes Chapter and the Seneca Falls Chapter. Ron Golumbeck, Seneca Falls DU Chapter chairman, said the company has been the primary supporter of his chapter's youth activities.
"They allow us to provide competition shooting events for our youth and sponsor a free lifetime New York hunting license to one of our youth participants each year," Golumbeck said. "They have been instrumental in supporting our activities and are one of our biggest and best partners."
Seneca Meadows Inc. also helps Ducks Unlimited's youth program, Greenwings, and has organized youth events that placed duck nesting boxes on the Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve.
Ducks Unlimited has a history of conservation work near Seneca Meadows. Over the last decade, DU and its partners have protected or restored more than 5,600 acres in the Montezuma Wetlands Complex of Central New York. The conservation projects provide critical breeding and migration habitat for over one million waterfowl and other wildlife, as well as opportunities to engage the public in outdoor recreation.
Ducks Unlimited Inc. is the world's largest nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving North America's continually disappearing waterfowl habitats. Established in 1937, Ducks Unlimited has conserved more than 14.5 million acres thanks to contributions from more than a million supporters across the continent. Guided by science and dedicated to program efficiency, DU works toward the vision of wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever.
