Ducks Unlimited and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) recently worked together to develop a new public hunting unit managed for waterfowl on Dewey W. Wills Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in La Salle Parish, approximately 20 miles northeast of Alexandria, Louisiana. DU engineers oversaw survey, design, and construction management on three miles of levees, six water-control structures, and other drainage features added to the WMA. The project restored a total of 3,000 acres of forested wetland habitat, increased foraging resources for wintering waterfowl, and provided new public hunting opportunities.

Support for the project came from the LDWF, Wetlands America Trust, the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana, the North American Wetlands Conservation Council, Exxon, and DU through contributions from 2014-2015 Louisiana Legacy Greenwings and friends of DU Major Sponsor and Go-Devil owner Warren Coco. A dedication ceremony will be held to honor Coco and the new Legacy Greenwings.
