When natural disasters strike, we often see communities come together to fight to restore and push forward. A prime example of this fighting spirit can be found in Schuyler, Nebraska, where severe flooding from the Platte River impacted the community and other parts of the state two weeks before the local Ducks Unlimited chapters 41st annual banquet. Bridges were washed away, and residents experienced significant damage to their homes, but that did not stop the Schuyler chapter from pushing ahead and holding its event.

Due to hazardous road conditions and bridge closings, some supporters and volunteers had to drive an hour out of their way to attend the event. The great thing about DU is that we all come together in times of need, says DU Senior Regional Director Steve Wilson. The Schuyler chapter wanted to be sure to invite their flood-devastated neighboring chapter of North Bend to the event to try to shine some light on the terrible situation in both communities.

At this years event the Schuyler chapter recognized 13 volunteers who had dedicated more than 20 years to DU. This committee works tirelessly to make our event a huge success each year, and this year was no exception, says Area Chairman Nick Brichacek. We are proud to honor them and their efforts.

More than 330 people attended the Schuyler event and, even in the wake of all the devastation and hazardous travel conditions, the chapter was able to raise more than $64,000 for DUs conservation mission.
