Workshop helped kids learn waterfowl hunting basics
Children 16 and under were invited to the 14th annual Ducks Unlimited youth waterfowl hunting workshop on Friday, Aug. 16. The workshop was a great place for kids to learn about conservation and hunting in a fun and safe environment. Along with Ducks Unlimited, this event was sponsored by North Dakota Department of Game and Fish and Starion Bank.
The workshop was at the Ducks Unlimited office at 2525 River Road in Bismarck. Two shooting sessions were held at Capital City Sporting Clays Range, 12951 71st Ave. NE, from 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Shooting sessions were for children age 9 and older and space is limited. A parent or guardian must transport and accompany children to the shooting range. Children 9 and under were accompanied by an adult throughout the event.
Workshop activities included duck identification and hunting regulations, decoy spreads, hunting gear, basic firearm safety, duck calling and retriever training. The first 20 participants (ages 9-16) who registered participated in one of the shooting training sessions in the afternoon. The shooting training included safe gun handling tips.
Kids could also sign up for a mentored waterfowl hunt with Ducks Unlimited volunteers at DUs Coteau Ranch.
