Ducks Unlimited recently hosted a free workshop for kids ages 16 and under to learn the basic skills needed for duck hunting. The kids also got a shooting lesson at Capitol City Sporting Clays, just outside of Bismarck, N.D. This was the 9th year for the workshop.
"This is a great event that introduces kids to Ducks Unlimited and hunting," said Jennifer Kross, DU communications specialist and organizer of the event. "This year we had a big group of 31 kids and it keeps growing every year."
The day began with a lesson on duck identification and review of North Dakota hunting regulations. Participants also learned about decoy spreads, hunting gear, basic firearm safety, duck calling and retriever training.
"We want to teach kids how to safely hunt waterfowl and help them learn techniques to be successful in the field," said Dane Buysse, DU conservation specialist and volunteer workshop instructor. "If we dont inform the next generation about the tradition of hunting and value of our natural resources who will? This is a great opportunity to share with others what we love about the waterfowl hunting experience."
The kids were served lunch, provided by Scheels, and went home with a bag of supplies they can use on their hunting adventures.
Ducks Unlimited volunteers also offered a mentored youth hunt during the youth waterfowl hunting season at the Coteau Ranch. Six attendees signed up for the hunt and experienced duck hunting on the prairies, many for the first time.
The workshop is sponsored by Ducks Unlimited, North Dakota Game and Fish and
Scheels Sporting Goods.
