Ducks Unlimited and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service joined forces to protect and restore an area of West Virginia called Middle Island, along the Ohio River. DU contributed funding to partially restore a 1.5-acre moist-soil wetland that had been degraded by agricultural usage. The wetland will provide valuable migration and wintering habitat for waterfowl, as well as habitat for shorebirds and amphibians.
The Ohio River has been dredged and modified extensively for commercial activities, so areas of the river that can be protected from further alteration are few. Rare projects such as the Middle Island Restoration provide the public an opportunity to enjoy the wild side of the river.
