The Cape May Peninsula and adjacent Delaware Bay are renowned for supporting a great abundance and diversity of waterfowl, shorebirds, and wading birds during migration and winter. An 87-acre tidal wetland restoration and enhancement project, recently completed by DU and its partners, will provide improved habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife in this ecologically significant area. Specifically, a large water-control structure and pipe were installed to reconnect a tidal basin and Delaware Bay at Cox Hall Creek in Cape May County. The restoration of tidal flows has helped control stands of invasive phragmites in the basin, benefiting waterfowl and other wildlife.
DU's partners in this project included the Cape May County Planning Department, Cape May County Department of Mosquito Control, Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership, Lower Township Municipal Utilities Authority, Lower Township Department of Public Works, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Delaware Bay Estuary Project, and Partners for Fish and Wildlife.
