Purpose: To enhance 425 acres of important waterfowl habitat on Mahannah WMA through installation of water control structures and construction of external levees. Wetland engineers from the DU Southern Regional Office surveyed, designed and developed six impoundments with 13 associated water control structures. Engineers also drilled one new well and installed a pump with capacity to deliver 3,000 gallons of water per minute. The well was connected to four impoundments by 1,300 feet of PVC pipe that will help summer irrigation and winter flooding. This project provides valuable foraging habitat to migrating and wintering waterfowl near the Yazoo River. Mallards, pintails, gadwall, green-winged teal, and wigeon will be the primary waterfowl species that benefit from this project. The impoundments will be managed by Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks staff to provide quality foraging habitat for waterfowl, while providing public hunting opportunities. habitat for waterfowl. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provided land and funding to implement this project as part of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Wildlife Mitigation Project.
