Ducks Unlimited is wrapping up its last project under Phase II of a
North American Wetlands Conservation Act grant supporting DU's South Carolina Lowcountry Wetlands Initiative. This project, on Bear Island Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Colleton County, will improve management capabilities on more than 2,400 acres of wetland impoundments. Owned and managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Bear Island WMA provides high-quality habitat for wintering waterfowl and other wetland-dependent wildlife, including threatened and endangered species such as wood storks and bald eagles. Bear Island WMA also provides habitat for upland game and nongame species, as well as recreational opportunities for hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts
