With grants from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, ConocoPhillips, and the state of Louisiana, Ducks Unlimited now has full funding to restore the flow of fresh water through Carencro Bayou in southeast Louisiana. This freshwater-introduction project will restore sediment inputs to more than 1,500 acres of coastal marsh in Terrebonne Parish. Six miles of existing canals will be used to convey fresh water, nutrients, and sediments from the Atchafalaya River and Bayou Penchant. A water-control structure will also be designed and installed to control salinity and maximize the flow of fresh water, providing much improved habitat for waterfowl and other wetland species.
