Golden Meadow, La - Dec.1, 2020 - Work has been completed on the 140-acre Golden Meadow Marsh Creation and Nourishment Project in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. This project is part of the Terrebonne Basin Ecosystem Restoration and Enhancement Project, a restoration effort designed to address habitat loss within the Terrebonne Basin.

The marsh creation area is owned by ConocoPhillips through its subsidiary, The Louisiana Land and Exploration Company LLC, and sits adjacent to the South Lafourche Levee District's flood protection levee system. "Marsh creation projects are critical to not only preventing land loss, but they help to mitigate flooding in the Lafourche and Terrebonne parish areas," stated Windell Curole, General Manager, South Lafourche Levee District.

The project utilized dredged material from Catfish Lake and pumped it approximately 1.5 miles through a pipeline system to fill in shallow water ponds that were once healthy marsh. "ConocoPhillips is passionate about being good stewards of its lands," commented John Harrington, Director, Coastal Wetlands, ConocoPhillips. "Part of that stewardship is helping to restore and conserve the land for everyone who calls this area home."

The newly created marsh will help to reduce wave energy from reaching the adjacent levee which will help to reduce stress on the levee. "The added layer of protection provided by the marsh will help protect the nearby town of Golden Meadow," said Archie P. Chaisson, III, Lafourche Parish President. "In an area that has seen dramatic land loss over the years, creating new marsh will significantly improve the function of our flood protection systems."

This project is part of an ongoing effort by Lafourche Parish Government, the South Lafourche Levee District, ConocoPhillips, Louisiana's Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Coastal Community Resilience Fund, landowners and other partners to create and nourish marshes adjacent to the hurricane protection levee.
