Purpose: This project involves the enhancement of two existing seep ponds (22 acres of moist-soil habitat) on Gene Howe WMA. Excavation activities associated with this project will consist of removal and installation of an existing water control structure. The Gene Howe WMA serves as both a wintering and breeding area for ducks, geese, and other wetland birds in the Central Flyway. While nesting habitat is abundant on the WMA, open water habitats for breeding pairs and broods is limiting. This project is managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to maintain high quality wetland habitat for breeding and wintering waterfowl, while providing additional hunting opportunities.
