When do you all start basic obedience training and then when do you start force fetching dogs? I have been force fetching dogs around 5-6 months old, but im starting to think that is too late.

I started obedience training with my GSP at 12 weeks.  I am new to training gun dogs and I am also trying to figure out when to start training the forced fetch.

Puppy obedience can (and should) begin right away. 7-9 weeks.  Formal obedience should not begin until 5 months or so (depending upon the pup's maturity level). Here are a couple of good resources:  http://tntkennels.com/store/positive-puppy-training  http://www.ybsmedia.com/index.php/jackie-mertens

Force fetch should not be started until adult teeth are in; around 6 months.

Yes basic manners should be taught extremely early, especially to males.

Most important lesson for males is to leave the younger females alone.

A male going after a young female can ruin the female for the rest of her life.

Unfortunately the resulting damage to the female usually isn't noticeable until a much later date.

Oh, this is the dog training section, I apologize.

I started basic training with my shorthair in week 9.  Simple stuff like sitting, stay, and come.  I just made the training quick like 10 minutes or so.
