I have a yellow Lab and he is 9 months old. I know I am starting late on training. Is there any advice that someone can give me. I have a duck retrieving toy, and a sportdog e collar. I have never trained a duck dog but want to train him right.

lot's of good info and advise on this Training Tips forum. take time and scroll down through it.

9 months is not too late.  but you will need to get a training program started and stay with it.

my advise is to get obedience training and force fetch started NOW.  forget the e collar for now.

you will have lots of fun training and the rewards are great in the field.

good luck.

Get a good training program.  http://www.ducks.org/mydu/members/messageboards/Topic473949.aspx

Get a check cord.

Get a pile of bumpers.

Start saving for a TT collar.

Without knowing much history about you, your dog, or your relationship thus far, it sounds as though both of you may benefit from taking an obedience course from a local professional.

While this will not teach your dog to be a great retriever, it is a good way to socialize your dog and also start him on basic obedience while teaching you how to work with your dog.

For many people, especially first time trainers, having a professional right there to show them how to properly relate to their dog is much  better than trying to learn from a book or dvd.

Once you have learned how to properly work with your dog, both of you will get much more out of the training material suggested here.

Good luck and have fun.
